Choosing a funeral director can be a daunting task. It is not something we do on a day to day basis and many people have no experience in it.

When choosing a funeral director a number of factors should be considered. Like any other professional service, you should carefully consider their qualifications, charges, facilities and ability to cater to your specific needs.


Above all else, you want your funeral director to be qualified and conduct themselves respectfully.

Your funeral director must have adequate facilities to cater for your funeral needs. When choosing a funeral director, it is a good idea to ask for a tour of their facilities.

On visiting the chapel, lounge, viewing and family areas, be sure to establish how long these will be made available to you on the day of the service. Don’t forget to enquire about parking, catering and audio visual facilities as well.

The cost of a funeral is an important factor when making a choice, but directly comparing costs is not always straightforward. 

Don’t be afraid to ask for a quotation before committing. This allows you to compare costs with others. When doing this it is important to ensure all components of the funeral are included so you are able to make a fair comparison. 

Different firms will have different fee structures. A quotation listing the lowest Professional Fee may in fact be the most expensive overall.

Payment Terms

It is also important to check on the funeral directors’ payment terms. A detailed written quotation is provided by J A Dunn at the time arrangements are discussed. We do not require any deposit or payment of disbursements upfront. The account, unless requested, is not issued until three or four weeks after the funeral service.
