Taking care of the finance

Although it can be difficult to consider costs at the time of bereavement, like any other service, expenses should be discussed prior to funeral arrangements being put in place.

It is difficult here to provide the price of a funeral because of the scope of options available; from the simplest essential care funeral through to the repatriation of a loved one to or from overseas. Having said that, in asking five or six questions of you, we are able to provide a very accurate estimate of the costs involved for the services you require.

When considering the costs of a funeral they are usually categorised as follows:

  • Professional Service Fees: This is what the funeral director’s charge is. You should always ask for a detailed description of the services provided by the funeral director for this fee.
  • Coffin or Casket Choice: A range of coffins and caskets are available from the simple & popular MDF models through to the more expensive solid timber versions.
  • Disbursements: These are the out of pocket expenses paid by the funeral company and should always be provided at cost. They include items such as cemetery costs, offering to the celebrant, flowers, advertising catering etc.

It is also important to check on the funeral directors terms. A detailed written quotation is provided by J A Dunn at the time arrangements are discussed. We do not require any deposit or payment of disbursements “upfront” and the account, unless requested, is not issued until three or four weeks after the funeral service.

Please contact us for more detailed information on the cost of a funeral. Once establishing your needs we will be happy to supply you with an accurate written quotation.

Remember to, if you do not feel able to discuss these matters, call on a friend or family member to help. People are often heard to say ‘if there is anything that I can do”. Most are sincere and would be honoured to be asked for assistance in finding out and comparing the costs involved for you.
